Postcards from Italy

Italy from the Air

Just because we’re travel specialists (and, ahem, enthusiasts) doesn’t mean that even we don’t need a little trip inspiration from time to time.

One of our favorite sources for new ideas–or simply refreshers on beloved classics–is Wendy Perrin, one of the most respected and recognized names in travel today. She recently launched her new website, which is chock full of consumer tips, travel advice, and trip reports—all served up in her signature approachable yet no-nonsense style.

Our eye fell immediately on her recent trip report about flying a small Cessna to Fogo Island, Newfoundland—or, better, gifting the piloting experience to her husband—and we were reminded of what an unforgettable experience seeing Italy from the air can be.

One of our favorite aerial tours is over Lake Como, which would be stunning for its scenery alone, but is particularly spectacular because passengers take to the skies in a seaplane directly from the lake’s waters.

For aerial photography buffs, a Cessna flight over the postcard-perfect Cinque Terre (which leaves from the airport in La Spezia) or a helicopter transfer to the island of Capri are two fabulous—but pricey—options.

We also love flying over the green, undulating landscape dotted with red-roofed villages and tiny hilltowns of central Italy, a bucolic scene which resembles a vast child’s play model from the air.

There is, of course, the budget solution, which requires nothing more than a window seat in economy class and a bit of luck. Maria Gabriella had both on our recent commercial flight from Venice, and was able to snap this fabulous and unplanned shot of La Serenissima.
